students, along with Honors College students from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, USA, led a series of discussions in the interdisciplinary course Game Changers: Big Ideas Throughout the History. The UAB course plan included discussing innovative ideas in various spheres of human endeavour — from politics to artistic culture.
In the discussion on the topic “Seeing and understanding: advantages of visual thinking in personal and professional growth”, SibFU students discussed the impact of art objects of the city on the world view of a person living in it. The American and Russian students of Honors Colleges were given the same task — to act as visual thinkers, comprehending the visible world and realizing the impact of this world on a person’s worldview.
In the space of the students’ home cities, the task was to select one or several art objects and, through their analysis, to understand the city’s integral image — the message that the city sends to a person. SibFU Honors College students Tatyana Sinyakova, Anna Dyomina and Nastasya Zborovitskaya, talked about what they understand under the concept of the visual messages of architectural and sculptural works of Krasnoyarsk. Students of the University of Alabama at Birmingham shared their vision of the meanings and implications of art objects in Jerusalem, Houston, New York.
“The greatest interest during the discussion was aroused by the talk of Tatyana Sinyakova from the School of Fundamental Biology and Biotechnology. For consideration, she chose the Krasnoyarsk “Khrushchevs” (residential blocks typical for USSR cities and built during the Khruschev period) and other objects of standard urban development. Her main idea was that simple architectural forms lead to the simplicity of the mental work of a person living in such architectural space. The idea was supported by American students, who agreed that creative and original architectural forms contribute to developing the creative component of human thinking,” said Maria Tarasova, head of SibFU Honors College. “The discussion turned out to be very lively and interesting. International dialogue of the honours students from different universities showed how inspiring ideas and their implementation unite creative people who can see and understand the world.”
