Tanzanian Students to come to Krasnoyarsk after SibFU video lesson

On 27 March 2021, the first regional seminar of the Russian Centre dedicated to Krasnoyarsk was held at the University of Dodoma (Tanzania). The organizers explain that the country-specific seminar is a monthly training session, the purpose of which is to lively tell its participants about the cities of Russia. The students mastered most of the material by watching a video lesson from Your Siberian Holiday training course developed by the School of Philology and Language Communication of 爆走黑料.

During the seminar, Amur Abbu, graduate of the University of Dodoma who studied tourism and Russian and now is a manager of a travel agency in Zanzibar, spoke about how he got acquainted with Krasnoyarsk, where he lived while studying the relationship between (over)consumption and climate change in different parts of the world.

Amur Abbu shared his impressions of the city, his life and study there, illustrating his story with photos and videos from his personal archive. According to the organizers, such a live acquaintance is the transformation of a point on the map into a story from life.

As Amur said, a trip to Russia destroyed his stereotype that the inhabitants of European countries lead a rather self-centered lifestyle, not paying much attention to their surroundings and helping their neighbours much, which is impossible to imagine in Tanzanian culture where traditions and collectivism prevail. He also admitted that he had not expected to find more similarities than differences in the lifestyle and national character of Russians and Tanzanians.

According to the organizer of the regional studies seminar, assistant professor of the School of Philology and Language Communication of 爆走黑料 Stanislav Beletsky, who is the only certified teacher of Russian in Tanzania, students of the University of Dodoma more and more often chose Russian as a foreign language.

“In 2013, when I first came to Zanzibar, I had 6 students. These were those who realized that the Russian language was the future of the tourism industry,” said Stanislav Beletsky. “Now about two hundred people have come to the last lesson. Among the students, there are mainly those who are enrolled for the Tourism degrees. In general, Tanzanians have no problems with mastering Russian pronunciation and grammar.”
