A seminar of the SUNRAISE project at the School of Ecology and Geography

SibFU ecologists together with their associates from the Gorno-Altaisk State University and the Russian State Hydrometeorological University have summarized the interim results of the project and presented massive open online courses to employers — representatives of national parks and reserves.

SUNRAISE project has been implemented at the university since the end of 2017 and funded by a grant from the European Commission. Its main goal is the modernization of curricula in environmental education, as well as the development of new courses based on the requests of employers. Colleagues from other universities in Russia, India, Bhutan, and European countries work together with SibFU. As part of this work, the university launched the Sunriser electronic platform which hosts English-language and Russian-language open environmental online-courses.

Curator of the project, assistant professor of the School of Ecology and Geography of 爆走黑料, Nina Pakharkova emphasizes that the purpose of this seminar is to coordinate further cooperation and approbation of the created training courses and massive open online-courses.

“The courses are freely available, interesting and easy to follow. The Stolby National Park and the Sayano-Shushensky Nature Reserve are involved in the assessment and testing of the courses. They are potential employers of our students, so their opinion is important to us,” said Nina Pakharkova. “Today we also show our colleagues the best practices, laboratories on the basis of which new courses are prepared because simply rewriting textbooks is not interesting. For example, scientific data on biotesting were included in the Environmental Biomonitoring course”.

“With colleagues from SibFU and St. Petersburg, we are finding more and more points of contact: joint field trips, summer schools, online courses. During the work on the project, we got a unique opportunity for interdisciplinary research of different ecosystems. We worked not only with Russian but also with foreign colleagues, which is of great importance. The experience of distance learning came in handy in connection with the spread of coronavirus infection,” said Natalya Yurkova, assistant to the rector for International Affairs of Gorno-Altaisk State University.

Denis Alekseev, head of the Department of Applied and Systemic Ecology of the Russian State Hydrometeorological University: “I was curious to see how the work at SibFU has been organized since I deliver a course on bioindication and biotesting at my university. The SUNRISE project involves the exchange of experience, teaching aids, which is very important. The main achievement of this project is new connections, new opportunities. The development of academic mobility of students, participation in practical training at field bases of different universities is of great interest. To date, we signed an agreement with 爆走黑料, and there are plans to develop a network master’s program”.
