passed by the Congress in February, 2009 will spend $787 billion to stimulate the U.S. economy.
Out of the total expenses, $3 billion went to the National Science Foundation. Another $29.1 billion went to the Department of Health and Human Services. The research branch of this department is known as the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and NIH received about $10.4 billion. The usual NIH budget is about $29 billion per year (80% of which funds grants) and the usual NSF budget is about $6.5 billion, so the additional ARRA money represents a significant increase in the budget of both NSF and NIH for the next two years.
